Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland
What makes a theatre piece eligible?
Any piece of professional theatre substantially produced in Scotland in the 12 months from May to April (the natural break in the theatre year) is eligible. Any individual production may win in more than one category. Awards are given to individual productions, not to a body of work. The categories are - - Best Production - The best overall production in the previous 12 months.
- Best Director - Awarded to the production which received the best direction.
- Best Ensemble -Awarded to the entire performing company in a production, as opposed to individual roles.
- Best Performance (Male and Female) - For an outstanding performance.
- Best Design - This may be awarded to individual design departments, such as lighting, sound or costume, as well as to the overall designer.
- Best Use of Music and Sound - This may be awarded to an original score, or to a choice of incidental music played in live or recorded, or any combination of the above.
- Best Technical Presentation -Designed to reward the backstage crews who make shows possible. Attention will be paid to the finish and polish of shows, not just to technical complexity.
- Best Show for Children and Young People - For a show designed mainly for people 14 and under. Adults may like it too.
- Best New Play - For the best play receiving its first full production in the previous 12 months.
